Friday Nights: Watching of Watchmen

"Why would I save a world, I no longer have a stake in?"

Being the comic book wannabe-geek that I am I had anticipated the release of Watchmen ever since good friend Jiggy brought it up over a year ago. I haven't had the chance to read through the entire graphic novel, yes that's because nobody wants to loan me the book!! (thank god i met Howie Powie :)) but from the looks of the movie, I am not sure too many people will enjoy this. Or I could be wrong. It happens.

Plenty of thought provoking discussions are sure to sprung from the characters, dialogues and events that transpire in the movie but Synder (300 director) didn't seem to want the movie to end. With close to a 3 hour running time, it will definitely alienate some non-history/comic book buffs (umm yeah I know people who don't even know what the Cold War was about...)

Purist will probably love that fact that he tried to squeeze in most of what was written in the graphic novel, but seriously, it's a film adaptation, not too sure they made the most out of the medium.

Some highlights: Love the opening credit. Silly me got so excited when I saw Andy Warhol (my fave) "making a cameo"; I'm still on the fence as to whether using Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" during one of the prerequisite sex scenes was the bomb or just plain bombed; While there were only a few "action" sequences, those that did make the cut, Snyder made sure that the shots were squirm-worthy!

Trivia: The guy who plays superhero/villain/I-think-he's-still-one-of-the-good-guys-only-flawed, Ozymandias was in Woody Allen's film, Match Point. He was the ex-fiance of Scarlet Johansson.

Argh Moments: I know that Watchmen was supposedly a lot deeper than your average graphic novel. And yes it depicted Superheroes as the flawed narcissitical beings they probably could be/are. However there comes a point in the movie that, IMHO, made everything Alan Moore wrote a bit pretentious. (To note: Alan moore = not pretentious, Movie translation = could pass of as such). A bit too self-indulgent at times. Plus it was 2 hours and 50 minutes!!! Sigh.

Verdict: Half and half. The fiance likes the movie, I love the character development they did but again.... it was 2 hours and 50 minutes loooong.

Hey, I was blog surfing yesterday as I saw a blogging site called yummy-cebu.com.... They were having a contest about who will win one day at sandtrap for free, all expenses going to yummy cebu.... Well, 2 bloggers were really close, cuz the competition is all about who has the ost likes, well, they started out as 8 likes and 7 likes.... 2 weeks later it became 29 and 29... and then until 38 38... and yesterday was the deadline.... at 6:00 pm it stopped... the LIKE WARZ which I watched with amusement ended at the international real time, 6:00 pm. sharp... and Dennies Siongco won, its on the site now... The standing was 63 to 60... and it was a well deserved prize for such an exciting battle.... My verdict, it's good to join yummy-cebu.com - if you write good blogs, well, see what happens? I'll give it a shot next time, maybe I'll end up having a agourmet dinner or a afun day in the swimming pool ,who knows what they're up to............. ;)
